This project was for a symposium themed "freaks and posters in the fashion industry". This line was created around the ideas of fetishism in fashion and the personification of something so taboo such as fetishism. The line showcases five different fetishes including Cult, animal, mask, skin, and bondage.
It is a costume-esque collection of skin, cult, animal, bondage, and mask fetishes. Each look is represented by masks and garments that represent the fetish in a human form. The viewer should look at the garments, and have a feeling of embarrassment, shame, or interest; as if the garment knows something that the onlooker didn't want anyone to know. It exposes the deepest secrets that someone holds close to themselves, exposing the taboo in their interests. The inspiration was drawn from fetishism in fashion, taking images and ideas that are inherently sexual, and turning them into a looming idea that follows someone around.
Each look is completely different in color and shape, but hold similarities in function and idea. The skin look is both body forming, and loose around the core of the person, with colors that reflect the most touched places, both casual, and sexual. The cult garment focuses on unity, and seclusion. The colors are gathered from famous images of cult followings, and are monochromatic, reflecting garments of cults that have existed in the past. Animals are shown through dark neutrals and animal parts including bones. This look reflects animalistic traits portrayed in humans and personification of animals. Bondage is shown through a white flowy dress, bound by chains, with the classic latex bondage mask. Showing both the innocence and dominance in the design. Masks are shown through multiple masks and garments expanding from the body. This reflects the ability to change someone's persona, and the importance of anonymity within this fetish.
For the Cult Fetish in particular, I wanted to focus on shape and creating something that seemed like a looming presence. The actual idea of a cult fetish revolves around a being being worshiped. The idea in the design is that it IS the figure that is being worshiped, in a forceful way. The veil and skirt having the same silhouette hints at the idea of unity and repetition within cults. The veil hides the face slightly, showing the lack of exposure within a cult, while the massive hood circles around the body, showing the exclusivity of the design and idea behind it.
